Mobile GSM Infrastructure over Satellite
The mobile GSM-solution MOGIS (Mobile GSM Infrastructure over Satellite) makes it possible to use mobile phones in areas where so far only limited communication has been possible, e.g. aboard aircraft, ships or in remote areas. While the wish to make phone calls, particularly by business travelers using airplanes, has existed for a long time, it is particularly at rescue operations during disasters in areas which so far had no access to radio services that the use of mobile radio is of vital importance. The MOGIS solution is based on the standard mobile radio technology of Siemens Nokia Networks, expanded by compressed, bandwidth-saving transmission over satellite, automatic (de)activation, depending on the respective location, for taking into account legal framework conditions and local impact on service.
For example "GSM on Board", the MOGIS solution for Airbus: A Siemens pico-base station routed behind the interior trim in airplanes makes reception for mobile phone, PC or organizer possible. By means of satellite technology the IP-based product is connected with the terrestrial GSM mobile radio network. For this purpose Siemens IT Solutions and Services SDE has developed a system component – consisting of hardware and software – for suppressing direct communication of mobile devices with base stations on the ground. In this way it is safeguarded that radio traffic from the aircraft is routed exclusively over satellite and does not interfere with aircraft electronics. Additional system software supplied by us provides for compression of voice and signaling data to minimize satellite bandwidth and for the adaptation of protocols to the framework conditions of satellite communication and the management of the overall system.
